People with narcissistic traits often put their own needs and feelings above everyone else’s – including their children. They usually struggle to have real, deep connections because they focus excessively on themselves without a sincere concern for others.

Your parent doesn’t need to be officially diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) for your life with them to feel chaotic, unpredictable, and emotionally draining. Understanding the signs of narcissistic behavior can help you deal with a narcissistic parent and find a way to thrive despite their narcissism. Learning how to live with a narcissist parent begins with understanding how their traits affect your day-to-day reality.

Key Traits of Narcissistic Parents and How They Affect Daily Life

Relationships with our parents are something we don’t get to choose. We have to decide how to deal with them. Some people might choose to estrange themselves and cut ties with their families. In contrast, others may continue living with a narcissistic parent.

If you live with a narcissistic parent, here are some typical behaviors in narcissistic parents to help you understand their narcissistic personality and navigate a delicate balance of boundaries and emotional self-preservation. Recognizing these signs is essential if you’re trying to understand how to live with a narcissist parent while maintaining your mental and emotional balance.

  • They show an excessive need for control
  • They lack empathy and struggle to understand or validate your feelings.
  • They are manipulative.
  • They project a lot.
  • They excessively seek validation.
  • They criticize and belittle you.
  • They have unrealistic expectations.
  • They always play a victim.
  • They violate your boundaries.
  • They are jealous.
  • They show favoritism.

Emotional and Psychological Impact of Coexisting with a Narcissistic Parent

Your narcissistic parents’ excessive need for control may have restrained your independence, making it challenging from a young age to trust your judgment or make autonomous decisions. Their lack of empathy often means their emotional needs are dismissed as unimportant, leaving them feeling unseen, unheard, and struggling with low self-esteem. Narcissistic parents frequently use gaslighting, emotional blackmail, blame, and other manipulative tactics to maintain control, which can erode your ability to trust others. They may turn you and your siblings against each other or show apparent favoritism to one child over another, fostering rivalry, resentment, and feelings of unworthiness in the less-favored child.

Additionally, your narcissistic parent may use drama to invade your boundaries and manipulate you. For example, they might create a crisis to demand immediate attention, such as claiming they are unwell whenever you prioritize other relationships. Additionally, projecting their failures and insecurities onto you can create a deep sense of inadequacy and lead you to internalize guilt, believing you’re responsible for their unhappiness. This dynamic often leads to perfectionism or chronic self-doubt as you strive for approval that is rarely, if ever, given freely.

How to Live with a Narcissistic Parent

Establishing Clear Boundaries to Protect Your Well-Being

Understand which behaviors trigger you and communicate your boundaries clearly and confidently. Use “I” statements and say ‘no’ to a narcissistic parent’s demands without offering further justification. For example, you might want to limit the amount of time you spend with a narcissistic parent, avoid their verbal abuse, and prevent them from intruding on your friendships and romantic relationships. You may learn to identify gaslighting phrases and tell your parent you won’t tolerate them.

A narcissistic parent will likely try to ignore or invade your boundaries. Establish and enforce consequences for crossing those boundaries, and remain firm and calm, regardless of how much they test them.

Managing Expectations and Avoiding Conflict

Knowing what to expect from a narcissist can help you avoid a lot of stress, frustration, and heartache. Focus on what you can control and avoid engaging in unnecessary power struggles.

When one parent is narcissistic, and the other is not, this can be challenging.  You will likely feel some form of betrayal or anger towards the non-narcissistic parent. It will be essential to begin healing, working through that anger, and vocalizing your expectations with the healthy parent.

Prioritizing Self-Care and Stress Management Techniques

Schedule regular self-care activities, such as exercise, connection with nature, meditation, or journaling, to reduce stress and strengthen resilience.

Creating Physical or Emotional Space When Possible

Set clear boundaries for creating the space you need for your well-being and enforce them consistently. As we suggested earlier, you might limit your time with the narcissistic parent. Also, you may avoid sensitive topics that provoke conflict or communicate the behaviors you will not tolerate.

Building a Support System for Guidance and Encouragement

Narcissists typically try to isolate their victims from their social support. Surround yourself with trusted friends, family, or support groups who understand your situation and can offer empathy and advice.
